ATMA Member CPD Obligations

It is important to be aware that as a member of the ATMA you are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) in each calendar year of membership. There is also a requirement to maintain your CPD under the Tax Agent Services Act 2009 in order to demonstrate that you have the competence, knowledge and skills required to perform professional tax agent and BAS Agents related services.

The ATMA will also in the near future be undertaking reviews of its members to ensure members are in compliance with their CPD obligations.

The ATMA offers a range of workshops and events to assist you in obtaining the required CPD hours. They include SMSF Audit workshops, a complying file for SMSFs workshops, QA workshops, FBT workshops, Business Planning workshops, Business Valuation workshops, Public Practice Certificate (PPC) workshops and the monthly Professional Development groups covering various topics.

Please also note that if you audit SMSFs then you must have completed an ATMA PPC workshop and an ATMA SMSF audit workshop.

New Laws are coming into effect for SMSF auditors and we recommend that if you have previously completed a SMSF audit workshop with the ATMA or other association more than 3 years ago that you do another ATMA SMSF audit workshop. This is to ensure your competency standards and knowledge requirements are as up to date as possible. This is due to the forthcoming changes to SMSF auditor registration requirements.

In addition if you are a tax agent or BAS Agent in public practice then you must have a PPC and have completed the ATMA’s PPC workshop. This is also a requirement under the Tax Agent Services Regulations 2009 if you are a voting member of a registered tax agent association or registered BAS agent association.
